Teerkuhlen on the Kuhlenberg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Teerkuhlen on the Kuhlenberg near Hänigsen in the Hanover region can be found on the Kuhlenberg, a slight hill north of the town on the Celler Weg at the level of the Riedel potash plant. The artificial sinks for the extraction of tar , which were mentioned in the 16th century and are now listed, are considered to be the most important evidence of Hänigsen's history.

history

The tar hollows on the Kuhlenberg were mentioned as early as 1546 by Georgius Agricola in his work De natura eorum, quae effluunt ex terra . They reflect an early and technically very simple form of oil extraction: Here people stabilized rectangular ground depressions at water-bearing, natural oil wells using wooden cladding . The tar deposited and floating on the water was skimmed off several times a day. This work as well as the processing and maintenance of the sources was carried out by the so-called "Kuhlenkerl". Most of the time, several local farmers bought a spring together, and they also paid the cowboy.

In 1930 a total of 40 tar hollows were recorded on the Kuhlenberg, which - according to old tradition - were separated from the surrounding open landscape by an artificial wall for safety reasons.

In 1988 the technical systems of the tar hollows were placed under protection as a whole by the state preservation authorities. When it was described in the monument topography of the Federal Republic of Germany at the beginning of the 21st century, one of the tar hollows had already been repaired for demonstration purposes and its casing had been reconstructed.
