Tegillarca is a shell - genus from the family of ark shells (Arcidae).

features

The same-folding, very bulbous cases are up to 10 cm in size. They are almost equilateral, the large, forwardly curled vertebrae sit only a little in front of the midline. They are egg-shaped in outline and only slightly longer than they are tall. The dorsal margin is straight. The anterior and posterior ends of the dorsal margin are angled. The rear edge is truncated, the front edge slightly arched. The ventral margin is almost straight in the central area. The ligament is narrow and rhomboidal with three to five dark, angled markings. It's essentially behind the vertebrae. The teeth consist of small teeth perpendicular to the lock plate. They get a little longer towards the front and back edges. The posterior sphincter is usually slightly larger than the anterior sphincter.

The whitish skin is very thick and firm. The ornamentation consists of radial ribs at regular intervals, which are flat-rectangular in cross-section or are dissolved into rectangular nodes. The inner edge of the housing is notched to match the outer ribs. The inside of the bowl is white.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The species of the genus Tegillarca occur in the tropical and subtropical waters of the Indo-Pacific.

They mostly live on muddy to sandy floors of the tidal range and the shallow water below the tidal range.

Taxonomy

The taxon was established by Tom Iredale in 1939 . Type species is Tegillarca (granosa) bessalis Iredale, 1939 (unclear rank: species or subspecies?), A more recent synonym of Tegillarca granosa (Linnaeus, 1758). The Treatise on Invertebrate Paleontology considered Tegillarca Iredale, 1939, as a younger synonym of Anadara Gray, 1847.

Molecular biological studies show that the two Tegillarca species examined form a small monophylum. However, this is placed in the middle of the genus Anadara Gray, 1847. The results allow only two conclusions: either Tegillarca must be combined with Anadara , or the genus Anadara in the previous extent is polyphyletic.
