Telatrygon is a genus of the family of stingrays (Dasyatidae), which on the Pacific coast of the Asian continent from Indonesia to the southern Japan and on the north coast of the Indian Ocean found from India to Indonesia.

features

Telatrygon species are small to medium-sized rays that reach a disc width of 29 to 73 cm. The body disc is very flat and more or less rhombic in shape, the outer ends of the pectoral fins are short or broadly rounded. The pelvic fins are medium-sized and protrude slightly above the body disc. The snout is long and tapers at an acute angle. The slightly protruding eyes are small to very small. The mouth is narrow and has no oral papillae. The tail is quite long and like a whip at the back. Its length can reach 1.4 to 3 times the diameter of the body disk. The tail base is narrow to medium-wide. A skin fold on the upper side of the tail can be more or less well developed or absent, the ventral skin fold can be short or long. The stinger sits far in front on the tail. The skin of the body disc is smooth, with no shoulder spines. In the nape of the neck there is a central row of denticles, which are usually separated from the larger, thorn-like denticles on the top of the tail by a denticle-free back. The Telatrygon species are monochrome on the back , the belly is white. The edges of the body disc are usually darker. The tail is monochrome or darker on top than on the underside.

species

At present (November 2016) four species are placed in the genus Telatrygon :

Telatrygon acutirostra is only provisionally placed in the genus Telatrygon . The species is similar to the others, but has a longer snout, a longer tail, smaller eyes, less pronounced skin folds on the tail and, in a phylogenetic analysis of the stingray, was a sister species to a clade of Telatrygon and Hemitrygon outside the genus.

Systematics

The genus Telatrygon was introduced in mid-2016 by the Australian marine biologist Peter R. Last, the US ichthyologist Gavin JP Naylor and another colleague. Three species of the genus previously belonged to Dasyatis , one has been newly described. The genus name is made up of "telum", a Latin word for spear or arrow, and "trygon", a Greek name for rays, and refers to the long, pointed snout of all species in the genus. Type of the genus is Telatrygon zugei (Müller & Henle, 1841).
