The Telegraph Island , Arabic جزيرة مقلب, DMG Ǧazīrat Maqlab orجزيرة تلغراف / Ǧazīrat Tiliġrāf is an island in Chaur asch-Scham, the inner, fjord-like part of Chasab Bay, in the Sultanate of Oman .

geography

The island is less than 400 meters from the coast of the Musandam Peninsula and less than 500 meters south of the much larger but much less known Shame Island. The Arabic name comes from the small village of Al-Maqlab, which is one kilometer southeast on the mainland coast.

It is 160 meters long, up to 90 meters wide and has an area of 1.1 hectares . It reaches a height of 22 meters.

history

The island got its name from a telegraph cable repeater station that was built on the island in 1864 as part of the connection from London to India . Due to unexpected problems, including the heat, the station was only in operation for a few years. Today only the foundation walls can be seen.
