Tell Abu al-Kharaz is a Bronze Age and Iron Age site in Gilead in the eastern Jordan Valley . He was with the biblical Jabesch Gilead ( Ri 21.8-15  EU , 1 Sam 11.1-11  EU , 31.11-13 EU , 2 Sam 2.4-5  EU , 21.12 EU , 1 Chr 10, 11-12  EU ) and the burial of King Saul .

location

Tell is 35 km from the Sea of Galilee and 80 km from the Mediterranean Sea and is 4 km east of the Jordan, 5 km north of Pella , at a crossroads of old trade routes that connected Megiddo and Bet She'an with the Mediterranean Sea and from Bet She ' to Wadi al-Yabis .

The tell is about 60 m high (−200 m above sea level) and covers an area of 300 × 400 m. It was excavated by the Swedish expedition to Jordan between 1989 and 2001 under the direction of Peter M. Fischer.

chronology

The settlement mound was inhabited from the Chalcolithic to the Islamic period. But between the early Bronze Age (EBA II) and the late Middle Bronze Age it was abandoned for over a thousand years.

Finds

Since the Middle Bronze Age (MB IIC, approx. 1600 BC), Cisjordan and Cypriot ceramics dominated Tell Abu al-Kharaz. Egyptian imports are almost completely absent. Cypriot imports were also found in the settlement ( White Slip I ceramic ).

Much 'chocolate-on-white' pottery was found in Tell Abu al-Kharaz. Such ceramics do not occur in Cyprus or in the Aegean Sea.

Imports

The earliest imports (phase 1, early Bronze Age), cylindrical jugs and club heads come from Egypt ( Naqada IIIB). They represent the northernmost Egyptian imports from this period to date.
