The Teloy mill is a Dutch windmill in the Meerbusch district of Lank-Latum . In addition to grain, oil seeds and trass were also ground here.

history

Construction and operation

The windmill, initially known as the “New Mill” , was probably built in 1822 or 1823 by the Lank baker Adolph Frangen. He received the building permit in July 1822, after the compulsory meal was lifted , in competition with the "Old Mill" , the mill on the Heidberg , which also belongs to Lank . The inner diameter of the mill was 7.90 m, the wall thickness was 1.20 m. The tower was 17.50 m high with a hood. The mill was first leased, then run by Frangen's son, rented out again and publicly auctioned off after Adolph Frangen's death in 1851. The mill was leased to the eponymous operator, the Bottrop miller Ludwig Teloy, in 1863. Teloy's wife took over the contract after his death and bought the mill in 1876. One of her sons, Eduard Teloy, took over the mill business and continued to run the mill until 1912. After his death, parts of the property and parts of the mill, including the wings, were sold. The rest of the land and the mill itself were sold to the municipality of Lank-Latum in 1952.

Renovation and subsequent use

The wingless mill was no longer used and fell into disrepair. The ring wall around the mill was in danger of collapsing, the beams rotten. The city of Meerbusch secured the building from 1970 by walling up all entrances.

Since 1969 the mill has been listed in an overview of the architectural monuments of the Kempen-Krefeld district in the home register of the Kempen-Krefeld district. The city of Meerbusch added the building to the list of buildings worth preserving in 1972 and to the city's list of monuments in 1980.

A possible restoration and use of the mill was discussed from 1971 onwards, but it was not until 1977, when the circular masonry had to be demolished because of the risk of collapse, that specific proposals were brought to the city's cultural committee. The plan was to use the ground floor as an exhibition and conference room; the upper floor was to serve as a storage room for the town-history magazine. In 1979 the city council of Meerbusch decided to restore the mill and make both the ground floor and the upper floor publicly available. The estimated costs for this amounted to 750,000 DM.

Construction work began in 1980. The sanitary and storage rooms required for use were laid underground. Reinforced concrete ceilings were drawn in and a staircase built in. The restoration work was completed in 1981. Since the renovation work was completed, the mill has been used as an event space for exhibitions, concerts and lectures. The home district of Lank , who had long campaigned for the mill to be given a hood and wings again and who had helped with the renovation by collecting donations, acquiring sponsors and doing manual work, set up their meeting point on the second floor, the Mahlstube , a.
