The Temple Hall was a cargo ship built in Scotland that sank under the name Telamon under the Greek flag in 1981 off the Spanish Canary Island of Lanzarote and is still there today.

history

The Temple Hall cargo ship was built in 1953 by Caledon Shipbuilding & Engineering Company Ltd. built in Dundee , Scotland.

Initially sailing for the Temple Steam Ship Company, the ship was sold to Demetrios P. Margaronis & Sons in 1969, renamed Pantelis and sailed under the Greek flag. In 1970 she was transferred to the Cia. Naviera Para Viajes Sud Amerika SA resold. After all, from 1977 she drove for K. Mitsotakis & Sons as Telamon - based on the first man in Hercules' entourage to climb the walls of Troy - still under the Greek flag.

Part of the last batch as a work of art in Costa Teguise

On its last trip with a load of tree trunks from San-Pédro on the Ivory Coast to Thessaloniki , the Telamon leaked off the Spanish Canary Island of Lanzarote. It was towed by a tuna fisherman to its current berth near the village of Las Caletas in the bay between Costa Teguise and Arrecife to prevent it from blocking the port of Arrecife. The Telamon sank there on October 31, 1981 to position 28 ° 58 ′ 33.2 ″  N , 13 ° 31 ′ 21.7 ″  W Coordinates: 28 ° 58 ′ 33.2 ″  N , 13 ° 31 ′ 21.7 ″  W .

The Spanish city planner José María Pérez Sánchez created a sculpture from the tree trunks of the last load of the ship, which was inaugurated in the middle of a tropic ( Plaza Tenerife  on OpenStreetMap ) in Costa Teguise on the night of June 23rd to 24th, 2009. It is called La hoguera de San Juan (the St. John's Fire ). Before that, the logs were lying around exposed to the weather.
