Look into the choir

The Temple Protestant (German: Evangelical Church ) is located in Beaussais in the Deux-Sèvres department in France . The church is used by the Evangelical Lutheran parish of St-Paul Prailles -Beaussais within the old Lutheran Église évangélique luthérienne – Synod de France . The apse and choir of the church have been classified as a monument historique since 1911 .

history

The church was built in the 12th century and on the outside shows Romanesque designs in the oldest parts in the east . Inside, the vaulting of the choir with a pointed barrel and the arch of the choir show the transition style from Romanesque to Gothic. However, the capitals in the choir and the capitals of the window pillars on the outside with their numerous figurative representations still show a purely Romanesque design language. The nave was changed in the 19th century.

After the wars of religion, the rural Poitou population was often reformed. The church in Beaussais was handed over to the Reformed after the Concordat in 1803, because there were only three families with a Catholic religious affiliation out of 737 inhabitants of the place. The church has been used by the Lutherans since 1969. Next to the church there is now the Musée du Protestantisme Poitevin, a museum on the history of Protestantism in Poitou. Part of the exhibition is also located in the nave of the church.
