Tengboche (also Thyangboche ) is a village in the Khumbu region in VDC Khumjung in the Solukhumbu district in Nepal . It lies at the foot of the northern slope of the Thamserku at an altitude of 3860 m .
The Buddhist monastery of Tengboche is the main cultural and religious center of the Khumbu. It was built in 1923, badly damaged by fire in 1989 and then rebuilt. The monastery has the largest temple, a so-called gompa , in the region. The Mani Rimbu Dance Festival takes place here at the end of October / beginning of November .
