The medium-sized plant wasps reach a body length of 10–13 mm. The wasps are very variable in color. One color variant of the females has a black head, a black thorax and a black front half of the abdomen . The rear half of the abdomen is orange. The eyes have a light border along the inside of the eyes. The antennae are black. The thorax can have a yellow lateral margin, the label can be colored yellow. The females can be distinguished from related species by the shape of the hypopygium on the abdominal underside. Similar species, especially of the females, are: T. nassata , T. coquebertii and T. scutellaris .
distribution
The species occurs in large parts of Europe. In the north they occur as far as Great Britain and Sweden. In the south it is apparently missing on the Iberian Peninsula .
