Tepoztlán is a city in the Mexican state of Morelos in the heart of the Tepoztlán Valley, around 75 kilometers south of Mexico City . The place has been one of the Pueblos Mágicos since 2002 and is the administrative seat of the municipality of Tepoztlán of the same name .
history
The name Tepoztlán comes from Nahuatl and is derived from the words Tepoztécatl (= Aztec deity) and tlan (near), which means 'near Tepoztécatl'. It is also related to a pre-Columbian pyramid, El Tepozteco . This was built between 1150 and 1350 and is located at an altitude of 2,000 m above Tepoztlán. This pyramid is the symbol of the never complete subjugation of the Mexica tribes by the Spanish conquerors who arrived in Tepoztlán in 1522.
geography
The center of Tepoztlán is surrounded by mountains at an altitude of 1,400 meters and has an average annual temperature of 18 ° C. In this subtropical climate, all sorts of exotic fruits thrive all year round. The rainy season lasts from June to October.
Attractions
Tepoztlán is surrounded by the 240 square kilometer El Tepozteco National Park , which has a biodiversity that is based on its location from 1,500 to 2,900 meters above sea level. In addition to the subtropical plains, there are also jagged valleys and inaccessible rock heights.
The archaeologically interesting zone with the Tepozteco, a pyramid built between 1150 and 1350 and located at an altitude of 2,000 meters , is visited by pilgrims from all over Mexico. To do this, they have to overcome an arduous and dangerous climb over 430 meters in altitude. The pyramid is the symbol of the never complete subjugation of the Mexica tribes by the Spanish conquerors. This peculiarity, which is based on pre-Hispanic civilization, is particularly pronounced in social life: strangers are welcomed as visitors, but are not initiated into traditional customs or accepted as neighbors with equal rights. A socialist-seeming model of common cultivation of land and common land ownership, the regulation of which is based on a monthly meeting of all, provided the model for the Mexican Revolution: the land to the one who works it; the system of ejidos . Furthermore, Tepoztlán was the winter residence of the Mexican-Aztec rulers.
In addition to regional food and drinks, the market in front of and next to the cathedral also offers medicinal plants and medicinal fruits for which Tepoztlán is known and which are mostly used by Indian naturopaths ( curanderos ) on site.
Other places of interest include the Museo y Centro de Documentación Histórica de Tepoztlán and the Carnival of Tepoztlán.
