Teresa CS Ávila-Pires
Teresa Cristina Sauer de Ávila-Pires (born June 20, 1955 ) is a Brazilian herpetologist . Her research focus is on the Brazilian scale reptile fauna .
Life
After a biology degree from 1974 to 1978, the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro Ávila-Pires 1982 graduated with Scripture Contribuição ao estudo do gênero Echinaster Müller & Troschel, 1840 (Echinodermata: Asteroidea) under the direction of Ignácio Aureliano Machado Brito for Master in the life sciences at the Museu Nacional da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro . From 1985 to 2018 she was a researcher at the Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi . In 1987 she was a fellow at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC , where she specialized in curatorial techniques for natural history museums. From 1987 to 1995 she studied herpetology at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at Leiden University , where she received her doctorate with the dissertation Lizards of Brazilian Amazonia (Reptilia: Squamata) under the supervision of her future husband Marinus Steven Hoogmoed .
From 1996 to 2001 she was visiting professor at the Nationaal Natuurhistorisch Museum (today Naturalis Biodiversity Center ) in Leiden . From 2001 to 2016 she was a research fellow at the Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History . In 2009 she did research on a postdoctoral fellowship at Brigham Young University in Provo , Utah . She has been retired since 2018.
Ávila-Pires' research interests include the natural history , taxonomy, and zoogeography of Neotropical double-creeps , common lizards, and snakes .
