Marinus Steven Hoogmoed

Marinus Steven Hoogmoed (born March 19, 1942 in Rotterdam ) is a Dutch herpetologist who has lived in Brazil since 2004. His research focus is the herpetofauna of Surinam and the Amazon region in Brazil .

Life

From September 1960 Hoogmoed completed a degree in biology at the University of Leiden , where he graduated in January 1966. From January 1966 to December 1973 a doctoral degree followed at the University of Leiden. From January 1966 until his retirement in April 2004 he was curator at the herpetological department of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie (predecessor museum of Naturalis ) in Leiden . From January 1990 to March 2001 he was head of the museum's vertebrate department.

From 1975 to 2003 he was a member of the specialized agency of CITES / UNEP in the Netherlands, from 1990 to 2003 he was its vice-president. In 1994 he became the European representative of the CITES / UNEP Animal Committee. From May 2000 to November 2002 he was chairman of the Leiden committee. Since November 2003 he has been a visiting researcher at the Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi in Belém , Brazil.

From April to November 1968 Hoogmoed undertook his first collecting expedition to Suriname and from January to February 1970 his second. On the first excursion, he collected all over the country, bringing together nearly 2,500 specimens of amphibians and reptiles, plus numerous specimens of mammals, birds, fish and insects. His second trip took him to the Sipaliwini savannah and the area around Paramaribo . 500 specimens of amphibians and reptiles, 80 specimens of birds and some specimens of mammals and fish have been collected here for the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie.

Hoogmoed has been the co-editor and academic reviewer of several international journals. He described twelve reptile species and nearly 40 amphibian species. In 1984 he established the genus Adelophryne .

In 1979 Hoogmoed was a founding member of the Societas Europaea Herpetologica and its general secretary until 1987.

Hoogmoed is married to the Brazilian herpetologist Teresa CS Ávila-Pires (* 1955).

Dedication names

The species Lepidoblepharis hoogmoedi (1995), Rhinella hoogmoedi (2006), Arthrosaura hoogmoedi (2008), Atractus hoogmoedi (2010), Marinussaurus curupira (2011) and Amphisbaena hoogmoedi (2018) are named after Hoogmoed .
