Terje Rollem

Terje Rollem actually Terje Rolld Martinsen (born September 16, 1915 in Bærum , Akershus ; † April 4, 1993 in Lillehammer , Oppland ) was active in occupied Norway during the Second World War in a leading position in the Norwegian resistance group Milorg and was an officer in after the war the Norwegian Armed Forces with the rank of Colonel .

Career

Rollem had attended high school in Denmark and had started his military career in the Kavalleriets Befalsskole , the Norwegian cavalry school in 1934. On April 9, 1940, he took part in fighting in Gudbrandstal and Åndalsnes with other members of the 2nd Norwegian Dragoons Regiment. After 1941 he was secretly at Milorg, the most important military resistance organization in Norway , and officially worked as a technician in an industrial company. After the war, Rollem was in the Norwegian Krigsskolen , was head of the staff of the Norwegian cavalry inspector from 1958-61 and from 1962 headed the defense district of North Hålogaland as a colonel. Among other things, he was involved in the NATO Northern Command in Kolsås and was in charge of military aspects at the Norwegian road construction administration until his retirement in 1971.

Personal

Rollem's parents were Martinsen, and his father was an accountant. His name changed due to the war in 1944. He was married to Ellen Marie (“Nusse”) Hansen, and they divorced in 1978.

On the night of May 8, 1945, Milorg heard of the German surrender. Rollem was responsible for mobilizing his squad and was involved in the takeover of Oslo.

Rollem became known nationwide for his involvement in the handover of Akershus Fortress in Oslo on May 11, 1945 . The photograph of the event made by Johannes Stage is a national icon of Norway, prints and prints were present in the post-war period and later in many Norwegian private homes. The picture was issued in 1995 as a stamp for the 50th anniversary of the liberation.
