Terry Austin (born August 23, 1952 ) is an American comic artist .

Life and work

Austin began working as a full-time comic book artist in the 1970s. In doing so, he has primarily specialized in reworking ("inking") the pencil drawings of other artists with Indian ink in order to prepare them for mass reproduction.

Austin, who began his career as an assistant to Dick Giordano , experienced his artistic breakthrough in 1976 as an ink pen on the Batman storyline "Strange Apparitions", written by Steve Englehart and drawn by Marshall Rogers , which appeared in the Detective Comics series. After moving to Marvel Comics , he started working on John Byrne's work in 1977 for the series Uncanny X-Men , which became the best-selling comic series in the United States at the time, not least because of Austin's atmospheric ink, and which he remained loyal to until 1981.

Since then, Austin has worked for the Doctor Strange , Superman , Justice League America and Green Lantern series, among others . Among the artists whose work Austin has inked include, in addition to John Byrne, illustrators such as Darryl Banks , Kevin Maguire and Paul Smith. Artists who have been declared to have been influenced by Austin's work include Andy Lanning and Art Thibert .

Austin's few pencil works include the 1991 One Shot Last of the Dragons and issues # 123 and 142 of Uncanny X-Men.

In recognition of his artistic achievements, Austin received the Comic Buyers' Fan Award in the "Best Inker" category from 1986 to 1989 and in 1996 and 1997.
