Terry Callier (* 24. May 1945 in Chicago , Illinois ; † 27. October 2012 ) was an American jazz -, Soul - and folk - guitarist , singer and composer .

Career

Callier, a childhood friend of Curtis Mayfield , was already making recordings in the early 1960s, but despite regional successes, he did not become famous. In particular, his three albums for the Cadet label, Occasional Rain , What Color Is Love (1972) and I Just Can't Help Myself (1973), received very good reviews and earned him a devoted following, but Callier was unable to make a major commercial breakthrough . At the end of the decade he switched to Elektra for two albums . His sound became more commercial, among other things he incorporated disco elements into his music. In 1982 the disco-heavy single I Don't Want to See Myself (Without You) was created for the small label Erect , but it was hardly noticed.

Due to a lack of commercial success, he took a job as a programmer at the University of Chicago in the early 1980s . However, he became better known after an English DJ started playing his old recordings in the UK in the early 1990s. The head of Acid Jazz Records , Eddie Pillar was so aware of him and brought him to occur regularly while holidaying in English clubs.

His comeback began in the late 1990s and he started making albums again. This was followed by a record with Beth Orton and in 1998 his work Timepeace was released , which won the Time for Peace Award of the United Nations for "outstanding artistic achievement". His sudden fame also led to his being fired from the university, which until then had known nothing of his life as a musician. Since then, Callier's new CDs have been released at regular intervals, most recently the album Hidden Conversations in 2009 . He died in October 2012 at the age of 67 after a long and serious illness.
