Trio in C major op.74 (Dvořák)

The trio in C major for two violins and viola, Op. 74 wrote Antonin Dvorak between 7 and 14. January 1887 in Prague .

Like the trio in B flat major , it was intended for a small group of domestic music enthusiasts. However, the technical requirements exceeded the limits of the original intention.

The work was premiered on March 30, 1887 at a chamber music concert of the Umělecká beseda artists' association in Prague by Karel Ondříček, Jan Buchal and Jaroslav Šťastný.

It was published by Simrock in Berlin in 1887 .

A performance of the work usually lasts about 22 minutes.

Sentence descriptions

1st movement: Introduzione , Allegro ma non troppo

4/4 time, key: C major

The first movement is intended as an introduction to the slow second movement. It is a three-part structure in which the calm theme of the corner parts is contrasted with a rhythmic, energetic thought in the middle part.

2nd movement: Larghetto

3/4 time, key: E major

The second sentence also follows a three-part structure, the orientation of the topics is also similar. The first theme moves over a calm eighth note accompaniment. In the second topic, on the other hand, a canonically - imitated thought creates the feeling of movement, which, however, disappears when the first topic reoccurs and then leads to dreaminess.

3rd movement: Scherzo , Vivace

3/4 time, key: A minor

The third movement retains the formal character of the classical scherzo . A spiritual bond with Schubert can be recognized. The corner parts are lively designed. In contrast, the middle section lives from warmth and melodic charm, which is achieved through characteristic modulation shifting .

4th movement: Thema con Variazioni , Poco Adagio

2/4 time, key: C major

The fourth movement deals with a theme in ten subsequent variations. They are essentially based on the basic harmony, the processing and the course is alternately kept in a fast and calm timeframe, which gives all the variations something characteristic, counterpoint, almost masterful.
