The Tetra GmbH in the town of Melle in the district of Osnabrück is a company of Spectrum Brands -Konzerns and is one of the world's leading manufacturers of aquaristischem accessories.
history
Tetra GmbH was founded in 1949 by Ulrich Baensch (1917–2006) in Melle, Lower Saxony , and has been the world market leader in the aquarium hobby for decades. On the basis of animal and vegetable raw materials, Baensch invented a special process to produce dry food for ornamental fish . The name of the first food is made up of Tetra (Greek "four") and Min (last syllable of "Vitamin"), ie TetraMin. In 1954, TetraMin was the world's first ornamental fish feed to be marketed directly worldwide. Baensch founded his company "TetraWerke" in the same year. In addition to the Melle location, Tetra GmbH now has branches in France, Great Britain, Italy, Poland, Japan, Singapore and the USA. Overall, the Tetra Group has agencies in over 90 countries. Tetra's global market share is 3.6 times that of its largest competitor.
New owners
In 1974 the company was sold to the American company WarnerLambert . In December 2002, Pfizer , which WarnerLambert had since acquired, sold Tetra to Triton , an independent European private equity fund. Almost three years later, the company was taken over by the American consumer goods group Spectrum Brands . Spectrum Brands is - with its subsidiary United Pet - one of the major American suppliers of pet food and pet supplies.
Products
Tetra GmbH produces various aquarium and garden pond products, including fish feed, water conditioners, water tests, medication for ornamental fish, feed for reptiles, technical devices such as water filters, membrane pumps and other devices for cleaning aquariums and garden ponds. Tetra has also been offering aquariums since 2006, which in the same year received the international IF Design Award 2006 in the leisure / lifestyle category.
The importance for the aquarium hobby
Tetra sponsored the film " Finding Nemo " in the USA . The Tetra-Verlag publishes special books on hunting and ornamental fish. The founder is the son of Ulrich Baensch, Hans Baensch . The company has been run independently by Hans-Joachim Herrmann since 1998. In addition to specialist literature, the offer also includes the “Aquaristik-Fachmagazin” magazine.
