The golden ring puffer ( Tetraodon mbu ) is a puffer fish that is widespread in the middle and lower Congo Basin and is also found in Lake Tanganyika in the mouth of the Malagarasi and in the lower reaches of the river. It is the largest freshwater puffer fish and is relatively common in its range.
features
It grows to a maximum of 67 to 75 cm long, but usually remains smaller. The body is relatively elongated compared to other puffer fish and, with the exception of the snout and lower tail stalk, is covered with very small spines. The spines can be erected on the belly side. The nostrils are provided with conspicuous, tentacle-like olfactory pit appendages. The back and sides of the body up to the level of the pectoral fins are yellow and patterned with numerous, winding, dark brown to black lines. The ventral side is yellow, the fins yellow to orange, the caudal fin occasionally with black longitudinal stripes. Instead of winding lines, juvenile fish have large, black spots and one or two dark horizontal lines on the tail fin stalk. The sexes of the gold ring puffer fish cannot be distinguished externally.
