The Teufelsmühle is a former sawmill in the Goldbachtal in Oybin ( Zittau Mountains ).

It is located at the stop of the same name on the Zittau narrow-gauge railway from Zittau to Oybin. Until 1834 the mill was called "Einsiedelmühle". The common name Schurfmühle and the old name Schurf for Niederoybin are intended to refer to mining. According to legend, a monk was brought here by the devil, from which the name Devil's Mill comes from.

history

Map of Oberreit around 1845

There is evidence that the mill dates from the time of the Cölestiner (approx. 1500), making it the oldest in Oybin. In 1574 the sawmill, which was part of a building complex, was converted into a grinding mill. On May 18, 1665, Elector Johann Georg II of Saxony visited the place. After the fire in the main building in 1848, a spinning mill was temporarily housed in it after reconstruction. After 1956 the building was used as a rest home for the state-owned Kirow factory in Leipzig. The nearby miners' house, in which the mill miners used to live, had to be demolished when the railway was built in 1890. Today the Teufelsmühle is a restaurant and hotel.

Atonement cross from 1670 at the Teufelsmühle in Oybin

Immediately at the Teufelsmühle there is an atonement cross from 1670. It was originally on the road to Zittau opposite the Einsiedel house. According to a legend, the last hermit was slain at this point during the Reformation.

geology

The Lusatian Fault runs near the Teufelsmühle . A borehole for the Zittau water supply brought up dark gray-green phyllite with lots of calcite and quartz under a 4 meter thick layer of sandstone, basalt rubble and slate up to 50 meters deep . These rocks and minerals are part of a series of ancient Paleozoic rocks that have been dragged up , especially in the Jeschken ( Ještěd ) area. According to the literature (see values from our homeland), the deep rock is provisionally assigned to the Rumburg granite , as it has not yet been possible to date it more precisely.
