The TI-74 (short TI-74 ) is a pocket computer (pocket computer) supported by Texas Instruments was developed (TI) and manufactured from the 1985th
The TI-74 was available as the basic TI-74 BASICALC version with extensive keyboard labeling for scientific functions and basic commands, and as the TI-74S with simplified or OEM labeling. Otherwise there is no technical difference between the two variants.
history
In 1985, the TI-74 was the first pocket computer to offer the possibility of storing your own programs written in BASIC on a small, external and easily exchangeable data memory , which set it apart from the products of the competition. The user can flexibly store data and BASIC programs on the RAM modules, which are up to 32 kB in size and fed by a button cell . BASIC programs as well as programs and data written in Pascal can also be 'burned' to EPROMs , which were initially available with 32 kB storage capacity . From 1988 there were EPROMs with 64 kB and 128 kB, which enabled the execution of more extensive and complex programs with larger amounts of data, e.g. As for the car - tariff calculation , enabled. For the German market, Texas Instruments in Freising kept software development and production of the Eprom modules for the TI-74 in-house until the end of 1989 , after which this area was outsourced .
distribution
Thanks to its large keys, a fully-fledged QWERTY keyboard with a separate number pad , its compact dimensions, the extensive range of accessories and, above all, the program modules that laymen can easily plug in, the TI-74S has become one of the most popular pocket computers in the banking and insurance sector. In 1987, Allianz Lebensversicherungs-AG was one of the first groups to equip its sales force across Germany with the TI-74S, which was labeled Life Consulting Computer, as well as an associated program module for life insurance tariff calculation .
