history

At the beginning of the twentieth century, the railroad entrepreneur Arthur E. Stilwell tried to build a railway line from Kansas City (Kansas) to Topolobampo on the Pacific with the Kansas City, Mexico and Orient Railway . The project failed for various reasons. When the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad (ATSF) took over the route in 1928 , the connection between Alpine and Presidio was still missing in the United States . The ATSF built the missing section by 1930 using the “Panhandle and Santa Fe Railway”. In 1989 the ATSF ceased operations on the Presidio - San Angelo Junction section known as the "South Orient".

The neighboring counties acquired the route with financial support from the state through the South Orient Rural Rail Transportation District (SORRTD). This was intended to ensure further rail traffic on this route. The newly founded South Orient Railroad was commissioned , which leased the route and was also involved in the acquisition. In 1998, however, the company had to file for bankruptcy and cease operations.

The state of Texas acquired the route for $ 9.5 million in 2001, of which 3.5 million came from the lease of the route for 50 years to Texas Pacifico Transportation from Grupo México. In the following three years around $ 20 million was invested in upgrading the line to make it suitable for the necessary tonnages and speeds. The company started operations at the turn of 2004/2005. Together with the Mexican sister company Ferromex and the Fort Worth and Western Railroad , a direct connection from Chihuahua to Fort Worth / Dallas can be offered.
