Thái Nguyên is a city in the Thái Nguyên Province in Vietnam . It is located on the banks of the Cầu River . In the 2009 census, the population of the city center was 199,732 (1999 census: 154,274). The district-free city of Thái Nguyên had a population of 307,318 in 2009. The city forms the seat of the administration of the province of the same name Thái Nguyên. The city is divided into 11 municipalities and has the status of a provincial city of the 1st class.

history

The city played an important role in Vietnam's struggles for independence during the French colonial era. The Thái Nguyên uprising in 1917 was the "largest and most destructive" anti-colonial uprising in French Indochina between the pacification of Tonkin in the 1880s and the Nghe-Tinh uprising in 1930–31. In August 1917, Vietnamese prison guards mutinied at Thái Nguyên Prison, the largest prison in the region. With the help of the released inmates - common criminals as well as political prisoners - and weapons captured from the provincial arsenal, the rebels were able to take control of the local administration. The uprising could only be put down by the French after 6 months.

During the First Indochina War , the province played an important role as a safe haven for the Việt Minh . In 1956, the city became the headquarters of the northernmost military region called Viet Bắc until reunification in 1975.

The original small town was elevated to a city in 1962.

economy

The city is known for its green tea , which is grown in the area and exported abroad from the city. With the establishment of the Thái Nguyên Iron & Steel Company (TISCO) in 1959, the city also became the center of a burgeoning metallurgical industry. The new plant produced its first cast iron in November 1963. Just a few weeks after the American terrorist air raids ended , experts from the GDR began to provide reconstruction aid. In 2009 it was transformed from a fully state-owned company into a partially privatized public company. The company became insolvent in 2019.

education

The Thái Nguyên University (TNU) is one of the most important regional university systems in Vietnam and serves the entire northern mountain region with more offshoots than any other city except those University of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City . In 1994 these many learning centers were brought together under one general administration. It includes seven colleges, a foreign language school and an international school.
