Thabong is a township in the municipality Matjhabeng in the province of Free State in South Africa . At the 2011 census , Thabong had 135,613 inhabitants, making it 16th among the largest cities in South Africa . More than 71% of the population speaks Sesotho .
The township was founded near Welkom for blacks ( Bantu ) as part of South Africa's racial segregation policy , which is why they still make up 99.3% of the population in 2011 (status: 2011 census).
