Matjhabeng ( English Matjhabeng Local Municipality ) is a local municipality in the Lejweleputswa district , Free State Province in South Africa . The seat of the municipal administration is in Welkom . Nkosinjani Wilson Speelman is the mayor.
The community name is the Sesotho word for "where nations meet" and refers to the different nationalities of the workers in the gold mines.

In 2011 the community had 406,461 inhabitants. Of these, 87.7% were black, 9.6% white and 2.1% colored . The number of inhabitants increased to 429,113 people by 2016.
The first language was 62.2% Sesotho, 11.9% Afrikaans and isiXhosa each , 3.5% English, 1.7% isiZulu , 1.7% Setswana and 1.1 & Xitsonga .
