Odendaalsrus , formerly Odendaalsrust is a city in the South African province of Free State (Free State). It is located in the Matjhabeng municipality in the Lejweleputswa district .
geography
In 2011 Odendaalsrus had 9393 inhabitants. The township settlement of Kutloanong (also Kutlwanong) with 54,350 inhabitants is located around ten kilometers to the east . Odendaalsrus is located 13 kilometers north of the city of Welkom .
history
The place was created in 1899 on the area of the Kalkkuil farm , after whose owner J. J. Odendaal the place was named ( Afrikaans ; German for example: "Odendaals Ruhe"). In 1912 the place received the municipal status. In 1946, gold was first found there in the area of the Patience Farm in what was then the Orange Free State . Alan Paton addressed this in his 1948 novel Cry the Beloved Country . As a result, the population grew rapidly. The Black settlement Hospital Park , about two kilometers from Odendaalsrus, was dissolved; the blacks had to move to the more distant township of Kutloanong ( Sesotho for "unity"). In 2000 Odendaalsrus came to the newly founded community Mathjabeng.
Economy and Transport
The main sources of income are gold mining and agriculture, especially corn cultivation.
Odendaalsrus is on the R30 , which connects Bothaville and Allanridge in the north with Theunissen in the south. The R34 runs from Bloemhof in the west via Wesselsbron and Odendaalsrus to Kroonstad in the north-northeast, the R70 runs from Odendaalsrus towards Hennenman in the south-east and further towards Ficksburg on the border with Lesotho .
Odendaalsrus is served by freight on the Whites –Bothaville branch line , which branches off the Johannesburg – Bloemfontein main line.
