The list of cities in South Africa provides an overview of the development of the population of the larger cities and municipalities of the state of South Africa .

South Africa is divided into nine provinces . These are divided into 52 districts, which in turn are divided into 231 parishes. The municipalities usually consist of several towns and cities. The country's seat of government is Pretoria, the seat of parliament is Cape Town. The highest judicial institutions (courts of law) are in Bloemfontein .
