The Thai Bangkaew Dog is a dog breed from Thailand temporarily recognized by the FCI ( group 5, section 5, standard number 358 ).
Origin and history
The historical roots are believed to be in the village of Bangkaew, which is in Bang Rakam County in Phitsanulok Province .
Legend has it that the third abbot of Wat Bangkaew Temple, the respected Luang Puh Maak Metharee, who was known for compassion and concern, was devoted to all living things. An old villager by the name of Tah Nim gave the abbot a large female dog with long black fur that is said to have been pregnant by a jackal. The pups were long haired, black and dark brown in color. After the birth, the abbot raised the four female pups.
In the breed standard it is shown that the breed goes back to a cross between a black and white bitch of a local Buddhist monk and a wild dog, which is now extinct. In 1957 the systematic breeding began, from which the present breed emerged. From Phitsanulok, the breed spread across Thailand. On April 14th 2011 the FCI provisionally recognized the breed.
description
The Thai Bangkaew Dog is compact and square in shape (shoulder height corresponds to length). The height at the withers is 43 to 53 cm with a tolerance of ± 2.5 cm, the bitches being smaller than the males . The fur with its "double coat" consists of the short undercoat and longer outer hairs in all shades of red, gray, brown and black with a large variety of fur patterns. The hair on the neck and shoulders forms a lion-like mane, which is more noticeable in males than in females. The well feathered tail is either pointed upwards in a saber shape or carried all over the back.
Essence
The Thai Bangkaew Dog is described in the standard as observant, intelligent, loyal, vigilant and obedient. He wants to protect his home and family and is easy to train.
