The thalattosaur are extinct aquatic living diapside reptiles that from the Central to the Upper Triassic lived in Europe, Asia and North America.

Fossils of the animals were initially found on Monte San Giorgio in the Swiss canton of Ticino and in the Hosselkus limestone in northern California . Finds from British Columbia , Nevada and China were later also known.

The thalattosauria were about a meter long, Askeptosaurus , the largest species, reached a length of 2.5 meters.

The systematic position of the thalattosauria is uncertain. They are probably close to the Archosauromorpha , but split off from them early on.
