Thalysia
Thalysia ( Greek Θαλύσια , after thallō ' to bloom') was a harvest festival in ancient Greece that was celebrated in honor of the goddess Demeter .
description
Its mention in Homer indicates the great age of the festival . In the Iliad it is a festival in honor of all gods, but the Oineus forgets the goddess Artemis during his sacrifice , who then lets the Calydonian boar devastate the land.
The third idyll of Theokrits takes place on the day of Thalysia on the island of Kos . The festival is dedicated to Demeter. She had her altar on the threshing floor on which grain was piled up for her; after the work in the fields was finished, the tools were put into this pile of grain. Next to it was a cult image of Demeter holding corn sheaves and poppies. Theocritus does not speak of a sacrifice, with him the goddess is honored with a feast to which guests are invited and at which the festival participants lie on freshly cut rushes and grapevine leaves.
Otherwise there are only a few reports that refer to the festival. Athenaios reports that the bread baked from the first grain was called Thalysion ( θαλύσιον ), Nonnos of Panopolis calls each first- child sacrifice Thalysia and uses the word as a term for a Demeter priestess.
reception
Derived from this , the vegetarian magazine founded by Eduard Baltzer was called Thalysia . Baltzer calls "Thalysianism" the natural way of life of vegetarians. After that, a number of vegetarian restaurants used the name. There was also a dress named after it in the reform clothing movement .
In the late 1920s, Paul Grams founded a publishing house in Leipzig called Thalysia and published, among other things, the Thalysia monthly books and a Thalysia handbook for health care .
