tourism

The shortest route to the Similan Islands , 70 km to the west, leads via Thap Lamu . The Phang Nga naval base of the Thai armed forces is located mainly north of the village, parallel to road 4147 . At the end of this local access road 4147 (branches off to the west from the Phetkasem) there are some piers where boats for diving excursions start. Further south - to do this you have to turn left after passing the national park administration - is the pier of the Andaman Tours to the Similan Islands.

economy

The economy of Thap Lamu is mainly based on fishing, as tourists hardly linger here. Protected by a peninsula, a natural harbor has formed here in a bay, which is used from north to south by the navy, tourism and fishing. Even so, Thap Lamu was hit by the catastrophic tsunami on December 26, 2004. Due to the protection of the hilly peninsula upstream, the water masses could only come in a slightly weakened manner from the north, so that they mainly caused greater damage to the naval base and the school. There were numerous deaths in the village. At the entrance to the village you can now see a tower with tsunami warning sirens and a large house on high stilts as an escape destination in the event of another tsunami.

There is a small resort and a golf course on the army grounds. In addition, Thap Lamu is used as a stepping stone to the Similan Islands. The nearest hotels are in Khao Lak, 15 km away . There are several ways to get to the Similan Islands from here. You can book a transfer with one of the numerous providers in Khao Lak or Thap Lamu and stay overnight on the islands. Tents and bungalows are available for this on islands 4 and 8. This is organized and operated by the Mu Ko Similan National Park . An alternative is to go to one of the diving centers for a day trip to the Similan Islands. This usually takes place with speed boats .
