The 101'ers were a pub rock band formed in May 1974 in which Joe Strummer (under the name Woody Mellor) sang and played guitar. The band existed until 1976 when Strummer left the group to form The Clash .

history

The 101'ers were founded in 1974 as El Huaso and the 101 All Stars (later also 101 All Stars ), the group named itself after an occupied house in London (101 Walterton Road). According to rumors, however, the band is said to have named themselves after the "Room 101", the torture room in George Orwell's 1984 novel . The band played at festivals such as the Stonehenge Free Festival .

Between 1975 and 1976 the group recorded twelve tracks, including the later singles Keys to Your Heart (with the B-side 5 Star Rock & Roll Petrol ) and Sweet Revenge (with the B-side Rabies ). On April 3, 1976, the Sex Pistols played as the opening act for the 101'ers, whereupon Joe Strummer disbanded the group and founded the punk band The Clash. Strummer said this in the documentary Westway to the World :

"5 seconds into their (the Pistols') first song, I knew we were like yesterday's paper, we were over."

"Five seconds after the beginning of their (the Sex Pistols) first piece, I knew that we were from yesterday, it was over with us."

- Joe Strummer

When the 101'ers' debut single Keys to Your Heart was released on Chiswick Records in 1976 , the band no longer existed. Joe Strummer founded The Clash, Clive Timperley joined The Passions, Dan Kelleher was to play with Martian Schoolgirls and The Derelicts and Richard Dudanski became a member of Public Image Ltd. and basement 5 . Tymon Dogg later became a guest musician with The Clash as well as a member of the Mescaleros . Álvaro Peña-Rojas went into business for himself with his own compositions.

“I know the 101'ers were good. In fact, as far as sound and excitement went we were much better than Eddie and the Hot Rods. The other guys in the group were twenty-five and twenty-six and they played good because they'd spent a few years getting that far. But they were just too old. What I really wanted was to get in with some young yobbo's who I was more in tune with. "

“I know the 101'ers were good. Actually, we were a lot better than Eddie & the Hot Rods in terms of sound and exaltation . The other guys in the band were 25 and 26 and they played well because they had practiced for years. But they were just too old. What I really wanted was to play with some young rowdies that I was more in tune with. "

- Joe Strummer

In 1981, when interest in The Clash was peaking, recordings of the 101'ers were released under the name Elgin Avenue Breakdown . In the same year the second single Sweet Revenge was released . Until his death in 2002, Joe Strummer planned to release the full 101'ers recordings, including live recordings. This project was realized in 2005 under the name Elgin Avenue Breakdown Revisited .
