Stephan Glöckner
Stephan Glöckner (born June 9, 1875 in Calbe (Saale) , † October 20, 1948 in Erlangen ) was a German classical philologist and high school teacher.
Stephan Glöckner, the son of a Protestant pastor, grew up in various villages and small towns in Brandenburg and Anhalt and attended the pedagogy for the monastery of Our Lady in Magdeburg , where he passed the school leaving examination on March 3, 1894. He then studied Classical Philology and German Studies at the University of Wroclaw . From his academic teachers he was particularly influenced by Eduard Norden , the author of the "Attic Art Prose" (1898), who also supervised Glöckner's dissertation on the history of rhetoric in the imperial era (1901). On May 15, 1902, Glöckner passed the teaching examination in Latin, Greek and German.
After completing his studies, Glöckner began teaching in Silesia. He spent the seminar year in Hirschberg , the trial year in Beuthen . As early as April 1, 1904, he received a permanent position as a senior teacher at the grammar school in Bunzlau , where he worked for over thirty years. On October 1, 1935, he retired and moved to Erlangen to devote himself entirely to his research.
Glöckner occupied himself with the rhetoric of the imperial era, the evidence of which was then only available in insufficient editions. Glöckner took part in the Teubner publishing house's plan to create a new critical edition of the Greek rhetoricians, and took over the writings of Sopatros and Georgios Monos . His main research focus remained Hermogenes von Tarsus , one of the most influential rhetoricians. Glöckner undertook several research trips (to Rome, Paris and elsewhere) at his own expense and had photocopies made. Because of the abundance of material he did not come to a conclusion. His scientific legacy, which mainly contains hand copies, photocopies and collations , is in the Erlangen-Nuremberg University Library .
