The Cave (computer game)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cave (German: "Die Höhle") is an action adventure game developed in 2013 by Double Fine Productions .

action

The Cave tells the story of seven characters who descend into a conscious cave to grant their greatest desires. In their quest, the characters are confronted with their past and the reasons for their search.

Game principle and technology

The Cave combines the mechanics of a jump-'n'-Run -Spiels with adventure elements. The game is presented from a side- scrolling perspective , the game world is made up of pre-rendered, two-dimensional images. The three-dimensional characters are composed of polygons . At the beginning the player selects three of the seven characters and can run and jump through the named cave with them. Occasionally he comes across objects that he has to use in certain places to unlock further areas of the cave. Each of the seven possible characters has its own skills that influence the solution of the game and enable access to certain levels that are only accessible to this character.

Production notes

Ron Gilbert had carried the basic idea of The Cave around with him for over 25 years. He started work on the game in 2010 with a small team. His three basic ideas were the selection of different game characters by the player, the basic concept of an easy-to-use platformer and the lack of a classic adventure inventory. The game engine Buddha , an in-house development by Double Fine, was used to develop the game .
