action
The cities of Besźel and Ul Qoma are geographically in exactly the same place, but in parallel worlds with different cultures and languages. There are transitions between them and the residents had to learn not to see the other city; it is strictly forbidden to them. This is controlled by the secret organization Breach. When the body of a murdered young woman from Ul Qoma is found in Besźel, Inspector Tyador Borlú of the Extreme Crime Squad takes over the investigation. On Besźels side, supported by Constable Corwi and on the side of Ul Qomas by Senior Detective Dhatt, he gets deeper and deeper into a web of political intrigue and business interests and more and more into conflict with Breach. He also meets supporters of the theory that there is a third city between the two cities: Orciny. Since his wife Katrynia, who disappeared six years ago, also believed in Orciny, Borlú's investigations are increasingly linked to the desire to clarify the disappearance of his wife.

History of origin
The series is based on the science fiction detective novel Die Stadt & Die Stadt (original title The City & The City ) by the British author China Miéville , who wrote it mainly as a gift for his then terminally ill mother, who had an absolute weakness for police work. The City & The City was published in May 2009 by Macmillan, London and in the USA by Del Rey Books. In 2010 the novel was published by Bastei Lübbe in a German translation by Eva Bauche-Eppers .
The novel is reminiscent of Kafka, Orwell and Philip K Dick. In 2010 Die Stadt & Die Stadt won the Hugo Award . The writer said: "It was fascinating and moving to see the transition from novel to script, and to work with Tony (Grisoni), Tom (Shankland) and everyone else on this production. What they do feels familiar, puts me back in my book, and yet it is very much your own creation, which I definitely want to explore. I am waiting for it with the utmost impatience. "
Directed by Tom Shankland . Tony Grisoni adapted Miéville's novel. Leading actor David Morrissey said, "I am delighted to be back working with the brilliant Tony Grisoni on this exciting project. I am a huge fan of China Miéville's book."
In April 2017, it was announced that David Morrissey would play the lead role of Inspector Tyador Borlú in the film. Other roles are played by Lara Pulver as Borlú's wife Katrynia; Mandeep Dhillon as Constable Corwi from Besźel Policzai; Maria Schrader as Senior Detective Dhatt from Ul Qoma Militsya; Ron Cook as Borlú's superior Commissioner Gadlem; Danny Webb as the extreme right-wing nationalist politician Major Syedr and Christian Camargo as Doctor Bowden, an American academic.
The shooting took place in Manchester and Liverpool , in May 2017 on Water Street.
The music for the series was composed by Dominik Scherrer . The soundtrack is slated for download from Dubois Records on April 6, 2018.
The four episodes of the only planned season to date were shown for the first time on BBC Two from April 6, 2018 .
