The Faery Tale Adventure is a computer game by Micro Illusions for the Amiga home computer . Released in 1987, it is considered by many Amiga players to be one of the best entry-level role-playing games . It was later released for other platforms like the Atari ST (1988), C64 / C128 (1988), DOS (1989) and Sega Mega Drive (1991). In 1998 a second part was released for the PC, which was more of a remake than a sequel.

Action and gameplay

The player takes on the role of one of three brothers named Julian, Phillip and Kevin, who were entrusted with the task of finding a magical talisman. During the search, a large number of characters ( NPC ) are encountered with the most varied of quests . In completing these tasks, you will have to visit many places and defeat a large number of enemies. Later in the game there is the possibility to cross the seas on the back of a turtle and a swan to cross the mountains in order to penetrate into previously inaccessible regions. The player is able to cast numerous spells with appropriate artifacts . That way he can turn on lights, heal himself and teleport across the country.

The object of the game is to recover a talisman stolen by a necromancer , the loss of which plunges the land of Holm into disaster. In addition to retrieving the talisman, the player has to fulfill various other tasks, which all contribute to the outcome of the adventure, such as rescuing the royal princess from a tower that is only accessible from the air or handing over the bones of an old king to death himself.

Simple battle sequences and the lack of detailed statistics make this game well suited for beginners to the genre . But the game world, which includes almost 17,000 screens - with types of terrain such as deserts, ice regions, underground caves and witch forests - is also very appealing for professionals.

history

Like most MicroIllusion games, this game first appeared for the Amiga and was then transferred to other systems. It was published for the Commodore 64 and DOS, whereby the graphics, due to the hardware restrictions, were of a significantly lower quality. In 1988 a port for the Macintosh computer was developed. The 256-color graphics were already quite advanced and significantly better than in the original Amiga version of the game. However, the Macintosh II was too expensive to become a successful gaming platform at the time. The port was never released, but a working beta version was completed before development ceased. Eventually, New World Computing acquired MicroIllusions and transferred the game to the Sega Mega Drive. This version was published by Electronic Arts.
