The Flirts was an American disco project by producer Bobby Orlando (* 1958), which had several chart successes in the 1980s . The most successful single was Passion in 1983 . The Flirts were counted among the representatives of the Italo Disco , but are also pioneers of the Hi-NRG .

Band history

In 1980, the producer and developed songwriter Bobby Orlando concept for a dance - Act with three singers . Orlando played most of the instruments (especially synthesizers , drum computers, etc.) himself and produced the tracks for his label O Records. The singers were cast according to the blonde-brunette-redhead scheme.

The first line-up consisted of Andrea del Conte (blonde), Rebecca Sullivan (brunette) and Sandra K'kay (red-haired), the latter soon being replaced by Holly Kerr (red-haired). The first album 10 Cents a Dance was recorded in this lineup (Andrea, Rebecca, Holly) in 1982 , and this formation can also be seen in the video clip for the single Jukebox (Don't Put Another Dime) . Andrea del Conte can be heard as lead singer on the title Passion . She had previously worked as a background singer and dancer for other bands. Rebecca Sullivan sings the song Calling All Boys . She previously worked as a model for the New York agency Wilhelmina Models for several years .

During 1982 Holly Kerr was replaced by the dancer Hope Reyman. In this formation (Andrea, Rebecca, Hope) several TV appearances in Europe with the single Passion were completed in autumn / winter 1982 , including in the shows Premiatissima in Italy and TopPop in the Netherlands . Passion then entered the charts in several European countries at the beginning of 1983 and became a top 10 hit in Germany and Switzerland .

In September 1983 there was an appearance on the US TV show American Bandstand , in which the upcoming album Born to Flirt was announced. Shortly afterwards, however, there was a falling out with Bobby Orlando, as a result of which all 3 women were exchanged.

For the other albums the line-up is given as follows:

  • 1983 - Born to Flirt : Linda Jo , Pamela, Rececca, Elizabeth
  • 1984 - Made in America : Debby, Christie, Christina
  • 1985 - Blondes Brunettes & Redheads : Tricia, Debby, Christina
  • 1986 - Questions of the Heart : Geri, Christina, Tricia

In 1986 interest in the retort ribbon faded . The album Questions of the Heart , which was released in December, was still rated "Recommended" by Billboard magazine , but could no longer be placed in the charts. In the following years, various best-of albums , but also new editions of older tracks as singles and maxi singles, hit stores.

Chart placements

The single Passion reached the top 10 in Germany and Switzerland . Helpless (You Took My Love) reached the top 20 in both countries in 1985. In the United States , flirting with singles Boy Crazy and Passion (both 1982), You & Me and Dancin 'Madly Backwards (both 1985), and Miss You and New Toy (both 1986) became the most successful acts in the dance scene and reached high positions on the Billboard dance charts .
