The Flys were a band from the second wave of British punk and were formed in Coventry in 1977 .

history

Founded by Hazel O'Connor's brother Neil O'Connor, who is also the majority wrote the songs, David Freeman, Joe Hughes and Pete King, the band was called initially "Midnight Circus", but quickly changed its name to The Flys.

Musically influenced by The Who and The Creation , the outward appearance derived from the mods , they played melodic punk rock and initially released the EP Bunch of Five under their own label.

They later signed with EMI and released a number of singles, such as Name Dropping , Fun City , Beverley and Love and a Molotov Cocktail , which can also be found on the first album Waikiki Beach Refugees , as well as various LPs.

The band was an insider tip. Sounds magazine recognized “timeless, sophisticated pop songs with hit class and significant and mature styles, as well as a very balanced and informal connection between English snottiness and American casualness ... located between the Byrds , Tom Petty , Ramones , the Rolling Stones and even the Beatles ”. There was no commercial breakthrough. In 1980, the band members split up after a fight in the rehearsal room.
