The Horowhenua Chronicle is a local newspaper in New Zealand . Its catchment area is in the south part of the North Island in the region Manawatu-Wanganui . The newspaper is based in Levin .

history

In 1893, William C. Nation and his son Charles founded the Manawatu Farmer and Horowhenua County Chronicle in Shannon . Three years later, in 1896, the politician and investor Joseph Ivess came to Levin and founded the Manawatu Express and Horowhenua County Advertiser . Ivess sold the leaf a short time later and was bought by the Nation family after the change of ownership and merged with their leaf to become the Manawatu Farmer . After a legal battle with its editor-in-chief and manager, David S. Papwort , Nation finally sold the paper in 1909 to Papwort , who renamed it the Horowhenua Daily Chronicle .

In 1960 the newspaper was bought by the United Publishing and Printing Company ( UPP ) and in 1985 it went to Wilson & Horton , who took over the UUP . In 1995, Independent Newspapers bought Wilson & Horton as the majority shareholder and took over the company entirely in April 1998. In 2001 ownership changed again to APN News & Media Limited ( APN ) and in 2008 APN changed the paper from daily to twice a week, Wednesdays and Saturdays. In addition, the paper was distributed free of charge to all households and has since been financed through advertisements. Since the paper no longer appears daily, the word " Daily " has been missing in the name of the newspaper.
