The Kick Horns (also spelled 'Kickhorns', occasionally referred to as 'Kick Horns' in accolades) is a group of wind instrumentalists founded in London in the 1980s by Simon C. Clarke, Tim Sanders and Roddy Lorimer .

background

Clarke, Sanders and Lorimer earned themselves a good reputation through their first work, among others with David Gilmour ( About Face , 1984), Dead or Alive ( Sophisticated Boom Boom , 1984), Pete Townshend ( White City: A Novel , 1985) and were booked as studio musicians for sound carrier recordings, but also for live performances by internationally successful artists.

After further work with, for example Bronski Beat ( Truthdare Doubledare , 1986) and The Communards ( Red , 1987), there was a first collaboration with the German band Extrabreit ( Sex After 3 Years in a Submarine , 1987).

The Kick Horns run their own recording studio , The Tall Place, in south-east London, which they also make available to other musicians. The studio's equipment includes Neumann microphones ( Neumann U87 ) and API preamplifiers. Simon Clarke and Tim Sanders also offer their services as arrangers . Even for recordings by third parties in which the group is involved, the group writes its own arrangements; occasionally it also happens that a finished arrangement is given to her.

For recordings with the section, other musicians are called in as required. The need depends either on the required or desired instrumentation for a piece or the number of instruments required. For example, for the song Sunday Sunday from the Blur album Modern Life is Rubbish, a euphonium and a tenor horn were required, while Chris Rea wanted an eight-piece brass section for Auberge, each with two trumpets, saxophones, trombones, a bass trombone and a tuba .
