About Face (English for. " U-turn ") is the second solo album by British musician David Gilmour , the guitarist , singer , composer and songwriter of the rock band Pink Floyd . It was released in March 1984. The album was produced by David Gilmour and co-produced by Bob Ezrin . The tracks were all composed by Gilmour, the lyrics for the tracks Love on the Air and All Lovers Are Deranged were written by The Who musician Pete Townshend .

background

The album was recorded in France with Andrew Jackson. The recordings were made at a time when the future of the band Pink Floyd was unclear. The album was mixed by James Guthrie at Mayfair Studios in London.

Guest musicians on the album were Jeff Porcaro , Pino Palladino , Deep Purple keyboardist Jon Lord and Steve Winwood . Even Michael Kamen was involved in the orchestral arrangements of the album, which he ex-Pink Floyd colleagues in the same year for Gilmour Roger Waters on his album The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking executed.

The album contained the disco-style single Blue Light and another single: Love on the Air .

About Face was re-released in Europe on August 14, 2006 as a CD with a sound revision, two of the songs were played a little longer.

As for Gilmour's first album, the Hipgnosis company was responsible for the cover design, whose employee Storm Thorgerson worked for About Face under the pseudonym "STd".

The second song on the album Murder is dedicated to the British musician John Lennon , who was killed in 1980 and whom Gilmour admired but never met (not even on Abbey Road ). The middle section of the text is aimed directly at the murderer, but Gilmour uses a knife as a metaphor ( On your own admission you raised up the knife ). In fact, Lennon was shot.

In 2006 a digitally revised version of the album was released on CD, this also contained longer versions of individual songs than on previous releases. The length of the longer version on this edition is given in brackets.

Unused pieces

Gilmour had written two other melodies for which he had no lyrics.

He therefore asked Roy Harper and, independently, Pete Townshend if they could write appropriate lyrics for the melodies. Gilmour did not like either of the proposed texts. So did Harper use his melody for the song "Hope" on the 1985 album with Jimmy Page on Whatever Happened to Jugula? . Townshend used his melody for the song "White City Fighting" on his 1984 solo album, White City: A Novel .
