The Last Remnant (OT: Japanese ラ ス ト レ ム ナ ン ト , Rasuto Remunanto ) is a computer role-playing game from Square Enix . The title was released simultaneously worldwide on November 20, 2008 for Xbox 360 . In addition to a version for the PC, which first appeared on March 20 in Europe and on April 9, 2009 in Japan, a version for the PlayStation 3 was originally announced. Most recently, company boss Yōichi Wada said that one had to weigh up the advantages and disadvantages of a PlayStation 3 version in the meantime. However, he only mentioned disadvantages that he sees in the moderate sales figures so far and the long period between the versions that have already been released. In addition to the Xbox 360 version and the PC version, a version is already available that is distributed via Steam . There is The Last Remnant since April 9, 2009 available worldwide simultaneously.

A multi-lingual playable demo of the PC version has been downloadable since February 25, 2009.

The Last Remnant was created under the pen of director and designer Hiroshi Takai. The title is Square Enix's first game to be based on the Unreal 3 engine acquired by Square Enix in January 2007. An Xbox 360 bundle of the game was also released in Japan on November 11, 2008. The soundtrack for the game is by Tsuyoshi Sekito and was released on December 10, 2008 in Japan.

action

More than 1000 years ago, humanity came into contact with the so-called Remnants . These magical fragments of a long forgotten era were used to ensure peace around the world. But soon people were divided into different classes, rulers and subjects. The fragments that were responsible for the balance in the world quickly became instruments for great and infinite power. Where once there was peace, blood has now been shed. The main character of The Last Remnant is Rush Sykes, an 18-year-old boy from the peaceful Eulam Village. He lives there until one day his 14-year-old sister Irina is kidnapped. Rush goes in search of his sister.

Gameplay

In The Last Remnant there are no random encounters, which have long been typical of role-playing games from Square Enix. Instead, the player can freely steer towards and attack opponents. The player goes into battle with so-called associations, a group of several figures. A display at the top of the screen shows the player the morale of his association, which has a significant effect on the fight. Basically, the combat system is a round and command-based system.

Monsters and races

In the world of The Last Remnant there is a multitude of graphically impressive and lovingly detailed monsters and enemies, which can be divided into 31 main categories. In each of these categories there are countless species, and one often encounters several of these genera in one fight. In addition to the common monsters, there are still race-dependent enemies in the form of Mitra (humanoids), Yama (large, fish-like creatures), Qsiti (small, rabbit-like creatures) and Sovani (cat-like creatures with four arms). The total of 238 exotic monsters present a very special challenge, which are often very difficult to discover and come with rewards.

Version differences

There are some substantive differences between the version of The Last Remnant for Xbox 360 and the PC version of the game. There are three new game modes in the PC version that was released later. A "High Speed Mode" increases the game speed during the battles and two further game modes are available after playing the game for the first time. This includes a "New Game + Mode", which allows you to create a second game status with the money and items from the first, and a "Ransatsu Maniacs Mode", in which the opponents are more difficult to defeat. In the PC version, Japanese and English can also be selected as voice output. Compared to the Xbox 360 version, the PC version also runs more smoothly.

Reviews and sales

The already released Xbox 360 version of The Last Remnant received very different reviews in the international press . The Japanese press, especially Famitsu , praised the title. The Famitsu awarded 38/40 points and praised the fighting system, but at the same time criticized the length of the individual fights. American online magazines such as IGN Entertainment (5.3 / 10) or Gamespot (6.5 / 10) gave far lower ratings. The renowned German game magazine PC Games awarded 67% for the PC version of the game and criticized u. a. the difficulty level is too low. At Metacritic, a website that combines numerous reviews into an average rating, The Last Remnant gets 65%.
