The Likes of Us

The Likes of Us is a musical from 1965 . It is the first work by the highly successful musical team Andrew Lloyd Webber (music) / Tim Rice (lyrics).

Despite big plans ( premieres in Oxford , Dublin or even in the West End of London ) it was initially not possible to produce the piece. It was not until its 40th anniversary that the work found its world premiere on July 12, 2005 in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Mermaid Theater in Sydmonton , England - albeit in a slightly different version and with a new song, This Is My Time . This show, in which Tim Rice himself took on the role of auctioneer, was recorded and broadcast on the radio and released on a double CD.

The Likes of Us is about the life of the English doctor , benefactor and children friend Thomas John Barnardo ( 1845 - 1905 ). The piece is similar in theme, style and cast to the very successful musical Oliver at the time of its creation ! by Lionel Bart ( 1960 ).
