The Marlborough Express is a daily regional newspaper in New Zealand . Their catchment area is in the northeastern part of the South Island with the editorial office in Blenheim .

history

The Marlborough Express was founded in Blenheim in 1866 by Samuel Johnson , an experienced journalist from England . Johnson , who came to New Zealand in 1862 and had worked in North Auckland for the Albertland Gazette and later for various other newspapers in the country, finally came to Blenheim and promised to publish a newspaper for the entire province against the politically rival newspapers in Picton and Blenheim . That helped him to gain a foothold with his newspaper in the highly competitive newspaper market in the province and to assert himself against the competition.

In 1879 Johnson sold the Express to Smith Furness and James Boudy . They published the newspaper daily from 1880 and took over the rival paper Marlborough Times in 1895 and the Marlborough Press in 1948 . The Furness family controlled the newspaper until 1998 when they sold the paper to Independent Newspapers Limited (INL).

The Independent Newspapers finally sold the Marlborough Express along with all other publications in their possession in 2003 to the Australian Fairfax Media Group.

The newspaper today
