content

Hanae Ashiya ( 芦 屋 花 繪 ) is looking forward to his first day of high school. But a few days earlier he is possessed by a yōkai who robs him of all strength. He spends the entire time in the school infirmary until he comes across an exorcist advertisement. He immediately shows up with his magical room, the Mononokean, and finally helps Ashiya after some argument. But now the student is heavily indebted to the exorcist Haruitsuki Abeno ( 安 倍 晴 齋 ) and has to work off the debt with him.

To Ashiya's surprise, Abeno is his age and in his class, so they see each other often anyway and Ashiya can always be pulled out of everyday school life for work assignments. The Mononokean, which is itself a yōkai, can appear behind any door and out of it you can get through the door at any place, including the underworld. His master can also open gates to the underworld to bring spirits and demons there. But after two gates into the underworld, Abeno is so exhausted that he collapses. Ashiya now helps him with his assignments, which often come from the yōkai themselves, and gets to know the world of the yōkai and the underworld. They also befriend Zenko Fujiwara ( 藤原 禅 子 ), the daughter of a priest in a small temple.

Ashiya is examined by the legislature, one of the rulers of the underworld, and asked if he would do anything for the good of the yōkai, as Abeno does. At the moment still undecided what that means, in the time afterwards he develops more and more feeling and compassion for the spirit beings. The fluffy yōkai who owned Ashiya also accompanies her from now on. The three meet Abeno's old friend, the fox demon Yahiko, who first curses Zenko to get Abeno's attention. He also heard the rumor that Abeno had killed the former master of the Mononokean. He denies it until Yahiko finally believes him. Since he doesn't want to go to the underworld, he lives with Zenko from then on. With the next orders Ashiya learns how negative, frightened or enthusiastic other people react to the yōkai they cannot see.
