The Nipple Erectors were a punk band from London who mixed typical 77s punk rock with rockabilly , pop and beat elements in their music .

history

The Nipple Erectors were founded in 1976 by Shanne Bradley (bass), Roger Towndrow (guitar), Arcane Vendetta (drums) and Shane MacGowan (vocals), who later achieved world fame with the folk-punk band The Pogues . In 1978, the Nipple Erectors released their debut single, King of the Bop, produced by Stan Brennan, MacGowan's employer at the Rocks-Off record store in Soho , and released on Soho Records . Then they shortened their band name to The Nips, as it was difficult to get gigs with the old name (translated as "the nipple harder") at the end of the 1970s.

As a result, the line-up changed frequently, only Shanne Bradley and Shane MacGowan remained as the core of the group. Among others, the later Pogues multi-instrumentalist James Fearnley (guitar) and Jon Moss , later drummer for Culture Club , played at the Nips .

The second Nips single All the Time in the World was released in 1978, followed by the single Gabrielle a year later . Paul Weller of The Jam produced their last single, Happy Song , which was only released in 1981. In 1980 the live album Only the End of the Beginning was released. At the end of this year the band broke up; MacGowan founded The New Republicans, which became Pogue Mahone and then The Pogues . Shanne Bradley became the bassist for the folk punk band The Men They Couldn't Hang . All of the band's studio recordings were included in the 1987 compilation Bops, Babes, Booze and Bovver .

In 2008 the band got together for two reunion concerts, but no new material was released.
