James Fearnley (born October 9, 1954 in Worsley , England ) is an English musician. He plays the accordion in the Irish-English folk-punk band The Pogues .

Musical career

As a child, Fearnley was a soprano in a boys' choir until his voice changed at the age of 16. He took piano lessons , but didn't like it, so he decided to learn guitar instead . He played with singer Nick Wade and later with a band from Teddington called "The Mixers".

Fearnley eventually became a guitarist in Shane MacGowan 's band The Nipple Erectors . The group consisted of Shane MacGowan ( vocals ), Shanne Bradley ( bass ) and Jon Moss ( drums ).

When the Nips broke up in late 1980, Fearnley joined the soul band "The Giants". Fearnley was finally asked by Jon Moss if he was interested in being a permanent member of the band Culture Club after playing for them from time to time in the past. Due to a misunderstanding, Fearnley never joined Culture Club, which soon became famous.

Fearnley instead sold his guitar and spent a year writing a novel.

In 1982 MacGowan and Jem Finer were looking for an accordionist for their newly formed group Pogues. MacGowan knew that Fearnley had taken piano lessons, so he assumed he could play the accordion as well. Finer arrived at Fearnley's apartment with an accordion in a laundry bag and persuaded Fearnley to try it out. Fearnley's nickname was then maestro because of his talent .

In 1989 he married actress Danielle von Zerneck and moved to Los Angeles , California . Fearnley left the Pogues in 1994 due to the increasingly busy tour calendar in order to be able to spend more time with his family. In 2001 he rejoined the Pogues at a reunification concert and continues to play with them to this day.

He was a founding member of The Low And Sweet Orchestra which his debut album of ballads in Spaghetti Western style Goodbye To All That published 1996th This group consisted of the former Thelonious Monster singer Mike Martt, as well as Circle Jerks , Zander Schloss ( guitar ), the brothers Kieran and Dermot Mulroney ( violin , cello , Dobro ), Tom Barta ( bass ) and Will Hughes ( drums ).
