Ruins of the Oa Church

The Oa Church , also Oa Parish Church , is a church building now in ruins on the Scottish Hebridean island of Islay . The church ruin is located on the Oa peninsula in the Risabus settlement belonging to the scattered settlement Coillabus . It is classified in the Scottish List of Monuments in Category C.

history

With the Mechtan's Church in Kilnaughton there was a church building of unknown date on the Oa Peninsula, which belonged to the Parish Kildalton . Kildalton Chapel served as the Parish's main church. In 1651 it was decided to build a new church near Lagavulin , which should replace the two churches. Its construction was completed towards the end of the 17th century. In 1828 the architect Thomas Telford completed the new Oa Church, which later served as the main church of Parish Oa , which was established in 1849 . It is not known when the church was no longer in use.

description

The building has external dimensions of 17 × 12 m 2 . Although there is no longer a roof, the outer walls are still largely intact today. These are plastered in the traditional Harling technique and once closed with a gable roof . At the north-west end there is a small bell tower that ends with a stone spire. There are a total of three arched windows in the north, south and east walls and two arched windows on the west side. The building can be entered from the west through two entrances. The floor of the ruin is now grassy. The old rectory in Coillabus probably belonged to this church.
