The Pip (German: the Pieper ) is the nickname of a shortwave signal originating in the Russian city of Rostov-on-Don , which can be received during the day on the frequency 5448 kHz and at night on the frequency 3756 kHz. Switching between the frequencies is seasonal. The signal is a beeping sound that repeats itself about 50 times per minute, which earned the station its nickname.

history

The first message from the station , which is still known and technically available today , comes from December 27, 1998. Detailed systematic records were not made until 2011.

The Pip was initially called XX by the Enigma 2000 , later renamed to XT. When the first confirmed voice message (in Russian) became known in 1999, Pip received the identifier S30.

The Pip is part of a military communication system known as a monolith network . Together with the transmitters The Buzzer (Enigma 2000 identifier: S28), Squeaky Wheel (Enigma 2000 identifier: S32) and other stations, it forms a transmission and reception center ("communiction hub") within the monolith network.

The beginning of the activity of Pip is not known, it is presumed to be in 1985. However, other messages were also observed before the first confirmed recording (see above), the content of which is no longer known today.

Location

The exact location is unknown, there are various assumptions about the location of Pip . On the corresponding side of the station when Priyom.org the coordinates are 47.29945 °  N , 39.67361 °  O specified as the location. Changes in location, such as with The Buzzer , have not yet been observed. Bearings show that Pip is in Russia , probably in the area of the Sea of Azov .

Broadcast schedule

The pip emits a continuous beep, about 50 beeps per minute. In rare cases the beep is interrupted and a voice message is sent. This tone is the so-called marker of the station. The other stations of the monolith network also show the use of a specific marker.

Callsign

Until about mid-December, the majority of the callsign was 8С1Щ (Latin transcription: 8S1Shch).

Abnormalities in the schedule

On December 3, 2011 the beep became weaker and shortly afterwards stopped completely. After a few minutes, however, the sound was audible again.

In a dossier that appeared on Priyom.org, it is speculated on this occasion that the beep is not generated digitally or via playback , but an analog source ( tape , cassette, ...) generates the sound of the transmitter, which in turn is generated by a microphone is recorded.

Voice messages

The following table lists known Pip voice messages . However, it is entirely possible that there were messages that were not registered by listeners.
