The Privateer is a folk metal band founded in 2007 in Freiburg .

history

The Privateer was founded in 2007 by Roman Willaredt and Christian Spöri. The band was originally supposed to be called "Privateer", but had to discard this idea due to a name dispute with a metal band from Warsaw . This is how the current band name " The Privateer" came about .

After their first demo CD Tavern Tales , consisting of the two songs Stormlashed and Basilisk , The Privateer played several concerts in Germany and Switzerland . The demo was so well received that another album was produced. Her debut album was released in 2012 with Facing the Tempest on the Trollzorn Records label . A year later, in 2013, Monolith followed, also on Trollzorn / SMP Records, their second album, which contains twelve songs.

In 2017 the band signed a new record deal with the Austrian label NoiseArt Records, through which the album The Goldsteen Lay was released on July 28th .

In October 2017 the singer Pablo Heist left the band. From January 1st, 2018 Daniel Priegnitz was the new front man, who was released from the band shortly afterwards and officially replaced by Jonas Piraterie on January 1st, 2019.

For the beginning of 2018, The Privateer was booked for a joint tour with Korpiklaani, Heidevolk, Arkona and Trollfest.

style

The Privateer says he plays so-called "Heavy Folk Metal". The style can also be called "pirate metal", as the lyrics, especially in the early days of the band's history, were heavily about this topic. Meanwhile, in the broadest sense, it is about everything that falls into the maritime sector. The music cannot be compared to other pirate metal bands like Running Wild or Alestorm . The influences in songwriting come more from the classic heavy metal area such as B. Iron Maiden or Grave Digger and more modern Viking / Death Metal à la Amon Amarth . Therefore the general mood is rather melancholy. In addition, the band members feel more comfortable in this area than in "wet-happy-humppa-metal" in the style of Alestorm and the like.

Musically, The Privateer can best be described as a mixture of heavy metal , power metal and death metal , underlaid with folk metal lyrics and accompanied by a violin.
